In Central America, Guatemala resides between Mexico and Honduras. Four times the size of the Netherlands, this country is home to nearly seventeen million people and there are two million tourists who visit each year. Guatemala is known for its diversity. There is the beautiful colonial city of Antigua, which resides on the Unesco World Heritage List, beautiful beaches, jungles an one of the largest lakes in Latin America and many impressive ruins. Although the country is filled with wonderful people and beautiful colors, unfortunately, there is a corrupt president and government, great poverty among the population and many stray animals.
In Midden-Amerika, tussen Mexico en Honduras in, ligt een klein land genaamd Guatemala. Ondanks dat dit land vier keer zo groot is als Nederland, wonen ook hier bijna zeventien miljoen mensen. Daarnaast wordt Guatemala ieder jaar nog eens bezocht door ruim twee miljoen toeristen. Guatemala staat bekend om zijn diversiteit. Van de mooie koloniale stad Antigua, dat zelfs op de Werelderfgoedlijst van Unesco staat, tot aan prachtige stranden, jungles, een van de grootste meren van Latijns-Amerika en vele indrukwekkende ruïnes. Naast de lieve gastvrije mensen en de mooiste vrolijke kleuren heeft Guatemala ook een keerzijde: een corrupte president en regering, grote armoede onder de bevolking en veel problemen met zwerfdieren.
WOOF-Guatemala is a Dutch-registered nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating the suffering of stray and disabled dogs in Guatemala. Founded by Tessa de Goede, who has lived and worked in Guatemala for over 17 years, the organization has rescued more than 500 dogs from the streets. Currently, Tessa and her husband Gerson care for 34 stray dogs in their home.
